4 Shade Trends We Love in 2023

Window treatments come in many forms, and shades are one of the most popular options. These continuous pieces of fabric or woven materials like wood offer great light control and some privacy. There’s enough variation so that you should have no trouble finding what you like. Shades, just like anything, are subject to trends, and these are 5 of the latest that we love.

Matchstick Shades

These are shades that look like small pieces of wood that have been woven together to create a shade with a horizontal line pattern. The tightness of the weave determines how much light the shades filter. The wood pattern provides a very nice visual texture to what could otherwise be very plain.

Top Down/Bottom Up Shades

These are interesting shades that you can raise at one end and lower at the other to control the light you get. The ends can be moved independently of one another, so if you want to block what people can see in your home but still get unfiltered light, you’d leave the bottom of the shade down and lower the top portion. These could be great for double-hung windows that open at both the top and bottom, allowing you to place shades on windows where traditional shades might block airflow.

Austrian and Roman Shades

Austrian and Roman shades function in the same way, with cloth extending downward in tiers or in ruched bunches. These shades can provide very good light control. Roman shades tend to be no-nonsense while Austrian shades are more frilly and tend to puff out more.

Roller Shades

These are tried and true shades that offer light filtering along with compact storage. When the shades are rolled up, they’re out of the way of your view and can be so unobtrusive that you might forget you have them. These shades can be custom-made for your windows to provide an excellent fit that blocks light along the sides as well as throughout the entire shade.
