How to Safely Clean Your Blinds and Shades

Some of the most overlooked dust-collectors in homes throughout Montgomery County, PA, are the window treatments. While beautiful blinds and shutters can bring together the home’s decor to create a pleasant, welcoming allure, dirty and dusty blinds can be incredibly off-putting.

When it comes to keeping blinds and shutters clean, many homeowners simply don’t know the safest and most effective cleaning methods. That’s why we’ve created this post, so you can rid your blinds of unsightly smudges, dust, and dirt without causing any damage to your valuable decor.

Faux-Wood

Many blinds and shutters are made of a faux-wood material. In fact, it’s one of the most popular variations of window coverings, and luckily, one of the easiest to clean. There are two ways to go about it. First, for blinds covered in dust, using a vacuum with a dust attachment can quickly and effectively get the job done. Just be sure to use a low setting, so you don’t bend or damage your blinds. For blinds with stains, smudges, or grease, a simple solution of equal parts vinegar and water can be a safe cleaner. Just use a soft, clean sock or microfiber towel to gently remove the stains.

Wood

Plantation shutters are popular down the Jersey Shore and are frequently made of wood. Wood blinds and shutters are often treated with a finish that repels dirt and stains. For a good, quality clean, use furniture polish and a clean, soft cloth to wipe the blinds. Be sure to spray the cloth and not the blinds directly, and also avoid spraying or wiping the cords. For a deeper clean, use plain water, but be sure you don’t saturate the wood and wipe any excess water immediately.

Fabric

Fabric shades covered in dust or dirt are best cleaned with a vacuum fitted with a dust brush, used on a low setting. You can also use a hair dryer set to the cool setting to blow away dust from the fabric. For stains on fabric blinds, a sponge or microfiber cloth with warm, soapy water can be used to clean the area gently. Just don’t oversaturate the blinds and be sure to let them dry thoroughly before raising them.
